Current Project: Letters to Ellie
I’ve had this idea for a few years to write a gripping story about loss, love and hope. I have it all mapped out now. I am using NaNoWriMo 2011 to help me get it finished. It’s been emotional to write it but I believe that is a good thing. It’s raw. It’s real. It’s not all fiction and based on some events that happened in my life. The names however will be changed for the final manuscript.
Fairies Project
For
those of you who have known me for a long time you know that I have always wanted to be a writer and author of books. A few years ago some friends of mine and I started a writing club called the Metaphores. We kept it going for a few years. It was a lot of fun and it really helped me to do some great writing exercises. I wrote a lot of poetry in my high school days and some in my early college days. It’s been about eight or nine months since I have written anything substantial.
I hurt my back over a month ago and Jason suggested that I get working on my fairy story while I was holed up at home in bed. A few weeks ago I got online and started doing some ground work on fairies. When did they originate in lore? What do they like or dislike? How many kinds are there? And many more questions. I got the idea when I visited my sister in England three years ago. My niece at the time was almost two and she just loved fairies. So, each night I would make up stories about Felicity the fairy. She loved to listen to them. When I got home, I decided that I would write a series for young adults about Felicity and her adventures with Ariella. As the years have gone by the concept was developed from something cute to an adventure spanning generations of one family. I am on my way to getting this project started first as a series of short stories just to get the writing out there and see if I like where it is going. I try to write something each day but it doesn’t always leave my mind and make it to the computer or pad of paper. I’ll keep you posted on how things are going.
A book you might want to check out, if you haven’t already, is Fabelhaven by Brandon Mull. He has an interesting take on fairies, though the book isn’t exclusively about fairies–it’s a YA novel about a brother and sister who discover their grandfather is keeper of a magical preserve. A fun quick read that might give you some inspiration.
Thanks Heather. I have not heard of this novel. I will see if we have it here in the library.
